Eagles Set to Travel to Mercer

STATESBORO, GA – After a short break, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team returns to the court traveling to Mercer on Friday, December 11. Tip inside the University Center is set for 7 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 102.9 WPMX-FM and globally on www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
Georgia Southern (3-4 overall, 2-0 Southern Conference) comes into Friday night's game following two consecutive conference victories. The Lady Eagles opened the “second” season at Appalachian State before returning home for the first time in nearly a month to play host to Elon. Victorious in both games, GS has now opened the conference slate with consecutive wins for the second consecutive season.
Four of Georgia Southern's starting five scored in double digits in the win over the Phoenix on Saturday (December 5). Senior Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) led all scorers with 17 points, while J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) recorded the fifth double-double of her career with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For her efforts in the week, Ogburn was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games December 1-7. Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) each posted 10 points in the win over the Phoenix.
For the season, Whitney paces the Lady Eagles' offense, averaging 11.4 points per contest. Ogburn follows with 10.6 on average for a senior combination. Leading the edge on glass, Ogburn pulls down 6.1 boards on average.
Mercer (4-2, 2-0 Atlantic Sun) is currently riding a four-game win streak including two A-Sun Conference wins. The Bears opened conference play notching victories over Lipscomb and Belmont, both in the University Center. Most recently, Mercer is coming off a 98-69 win over Belmont in which four players posted double figures. LaToya Jackson scored a game-high 23 points, while Courtney Ford recorded her second triple-double of the season with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. The triple-double earned the Bear her third consecutive A-Sun Player of the Week nod.
Jackson leads Mercer in scoring for the season, averaging 16.8 points per contest, while Ford follows closely behind with 16.0 points on average. Ford also leads the rebounding edge, pulling down 11.0 boards on average.
Mercer leads the all-time series over Georgia Southern, 30-26, and the all-time series in Macon, 14-9. Currently, head coach Rusty Cram is on a three-game win streak over the Bears and is 5-1 overall when facing Mercer. The last game between the two schools dates back to the 2004-05 season when Georgia Southern edged Mercer, 73-50, in Statesboro.
After Friday's game at Mercer, the Lady Eagles head to UNC Asheville for a December 16th match-up before returning to Hanner Fieldhouse for four straight games beginning December 19th with Western Carolina.
