STATESBORO, GA – On Wednesday, December 2, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team closes out a five-game road swing while officially opening Southern Conference play at Appalachian State. Tip off in the Holmes Center is slated for 7 p.m.
Georgia Southern (1-4) will look to snap a four-game skid traveling to the Mountaineers. Most recently, Georgia Southern is coming off a loss to New Orleans in the second game of the Omni Hotels Classic in Boulder, Colo. In the opening game of the Thanksgiving tournament, the Lady Eagles held the Colorado Buffaloes to a 21-20 halftime lead. The Buffaloes outscored the Lady Eagles in the second half to come away with a 62-50 final score.
Showing true leadership, the senior class leads Georgia Southern for the season. Senior Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.), an All-Tournament selection in Colorado, averages 9.4 points per game, while fellow classmate J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) follows closely with 9.2 points on average. Senior Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) paces Georgia Southern on the boards pulling down 5.2 rebounds on average. Ogburn follows with 5.0.
Appalachian State (2-3) enters conference play coming off a narrow overtime win against Miami (OH). The Mountaineers took the contest, 79-76. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Appalachian State.
Sam Ramirez leads the Mountaineers on offense, averaging 12.8 points per contest, while Ashlen Dewart averages 11.2 ppg. Anna Freeman owns a 9.8 rebound average to pace Appalachian State.
Wednesday's contest will be the 43rd meeting between the conference schools in program history. Georgia Southern holds the all-time series advantage, 29-13, and a 14-4 record when playing in Boone, N.C. Against Appalachian State, head coach Rusty Cram boasts a 23-7 record since taking the reins at Georgia Southern in 1996.
The two programs split the series last season. The Lady Eagles took the first contest in Statesboro by a 69-53 decision to open SoCon play. The Mountaineers, however, were victorious in the regular-season finale in Boone, 59-68.
