Georgia Southern Falls to New Orleans in Omni Hotels Classic

BOULDER, Colo. – In the second game of the Omni Hotels Classic, Meredyth Frye set a career-high in three-pointers made, draining three, en route to setting a personal best 10 points. Carolyn Whitney added another three from beyond the arc, but the six treys from Georgia Southern were not enough as University of New Orleans came away with a 50-39 win on the final day of the Omni Hotels Classic (November 28). Georgia Southern, on a four-game losing streak, fell to 1-4, while UNO improved to 3-2.
UNO held the Lady Eagles scoreless through the first ten minutes of play while posting nine unanswered off four jumpers from an assortment of players and one free throw. A personal foul by Juanita Cochran sent Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) to the foul line at the 9:14 marker. Whitney drained both attempts, putting Georgia Southern on the board, 11-2. Whitney's trip to the line sparked the Lady Eagles as Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) scored the first field goal for Georgia Southern seconds before Whitney drained her first three of the game, pushing the score to 11-7.
Buckets from Logan Youngblood (Sylvester, Ga.) and Candice Ivy (Roswell, Ga.) intermixed with field goals from Candice McGee and Mirjam Sipos set the score at 15-11 with 5:34 remaining in the opening frame. The Privateers extended their lead to 20-11 with a three-point basket from Amanda McCarthy. An 11-point Privateer lead was cut to seven, 22-15, with consecutive baskets from Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.). UNO closed out the first half with a pair of free throws from Brittany Helm for a 24-15 halftime lead.
Georgia Southern shot 22.2 percent from the floor, connecting on only six shots, to New Orleans' 34.6 percent shooting with nine buckets. Both teams committed 10 turnovers, but UNO went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe for 83.3 percent efficiency; Whitney's recorded two free throws for Georgia Southern were the only two for the Lady Eagles. While both teams pulled down seven offensive boards, UNO pulled down an extra six defensive rebounds to win the edge on glass, 23-17, for the first half. Talisha Bridges recorded five of the 23 Privateer rebounds. Whitney paced the Lady Eagles in the first frame with five points. Frye (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Tate tied with four rebounds for the team lead.

Whitney's bucket at 15:32 made the score 26-18. Ro-Ro Smith (Blackshear, Ga.) cut the margin to six points, 26-20, hitting two from the free throw line. UNO opened a 13-point lead off a three-pointer from McCarthy with just over ten minutes left to play. A pair of three-pointers from the hands of Whitney and Frye cut the score to 37-28 with 7:18 remaining. Taking three trips to the charity stripe within one minute, Nicole Homes went 5-of-6 from the line, giving UNO a 44-30 lead.

Forty-five seconds later, Frye nailed her third three-pointer of the game, setting the score at 48-37.
