Eagles Host Samford in Regular Season Finale

STATESBORO, GA – Lone senior Cristin Haines will be honored prior to the regular season finale of the 2009 season Saturday night (November 14) as the Georgia Southern volleyball team welcomes Samford to Hanner Fieldhouse. On Senior Day and “BLUE OUT”, the Eagles will challenge Southern Conference foe Samford at 7 p.m.
Georgia Southern stands in third place of the SoCon South Division boasting a record of 20-10 and 10-5 against league opponents. The Eagles are coming off a five-set road win at Davidson, Tuesday (November 10). Junior Sarah Gildersleeve (Naples, Fla.) recorded a career-high 15 kills in the win, helping the Eagles erase a 2-0 deficit following intermission. Gildersleeve leads all hitters on the team with a .303 hitting efficiency for the season.
Continuing to lead Georgia Southern the entire season, sophomore outside hitter Bethany Sanford (Avondale, Ariz.) leads the team with 3.50 kills per set for a total of 381 on the year, good enough to rank her second in the conference. With 1,201 assists, freshman setter Kate Van Dyke (Shawnee, Kan.) is the fourth in the all-time record book for assists in a season. Van Dyke is first in the conference averaging 10.63 assists per set. Senior libero Haines (Palos Heights, Ill.) owns 462 digs for a 4.09 set average to lead the Eagles' back row.
Samford clinched at least a share of the SoCon's North Division on Sunday, defeating Western Carolina, 3-1. The Bulldogs, with the win, bring a 17-12 overall record and 11-4 SoCon mark into Saturday's match. For the season, the Bulldogs are paced by senior middle blocker Sheriden Stanghor who owns a .313 hitting percentage off 332 kills. Stanghor is the all-time leader in block assists and places second on the team with 21 aces.
Owning the most kills on the team, Allie Bettinger ranks third in the conference with 339 kills to average 3.17 per set. Hillary Fountain leads the team's offense averaging 8.41 assists per set, while freshman libero Alexis Bauer paces the Samford defense with 3.54 digs per set.
Saturday's contest will be the 11th meeting between the two schools. Samford holds the all-time series advantage, 8-2, after taking both match-ups last season as conference opponents. The last meeting between the two programs before Samford joined the Southern Conference dates back to 2004. The Eagles handed the Bulldogs a 3-1 loss in the Texas A&M/McDonald's Invitational.

Fans that present a ticket stub to the afternoon football game between Furman and Georgia Southern will receive free admission to the match in Hanner Fieldhouse. All those in attendance to the match are asked to wear blue to "BLUE OUT" Hanner Fieldhouse as the Eagles take to the court at home for the last time this regular season.
