Lady Eagles Set to Tip-Off 2009-2010 Season Friday Night

STATESBORO, GA – In less than 48 hours, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team will kick off the 2009-2010 season in Hanner Fieldhouse. The Lady Eagles open regular-season play with non-conference foe Brewton-Parker. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. followed by opening night of the Georgia Southern men's basketball season at 7:30 p.m. against Reinhardt.
Friday night's contest will be the fourth meeting between the two programs. Georgia Southern holds the all-time series edge over the Barons, 3-0, as head coach Rusty Cram is a perfect 2-0 when facing Brewton-Parker.
“We are excited about finally getting off the practice court and getting to compete against somebody. The season is here and the kids are excited about that and ready to go,” said Cram. “We are excited as a coaching staff because we get to see where we are at and what we need to work on – what we need to go to next and see how far we have actually come. And we can start working on our depth factor getting some of our younger kids experience on the court, which is what they need.”
Season opening night for 2009-2010 is reminiscent of one year ago when the Lady Eagles opened their season against Brewton-Parker. Under guidance of Cram, Georgia Southern defeated the Barons, 93-44, to mark the 10th-straight season opening victory for Georgia Southern.
Georgia Southern returns 10 letterwinners from 2008-09 and four players with starting potential. Headlining the 2009-2010 squad are seniors Jessica Geiger, J'Lisia Ogburn, Carolyn Whitney and Elise Whitney.
Back to begin their senior campaigns, Geiger and Ogburn will not only lead as seniors on the team, but in the post game as well. Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) returns after averaging 6.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, while Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) returns as the leading scorer from last year. Ogburn chipped in 9.7 points on average while pulling down 5.9 boards per game.
Jamie Navarro, a junior from Naples, Fla., will remain the starting point guard for the Lady Eagles after filling in with the role in 2008-09 after Whitney was sidelined with an injury. As a starting sophomore in 23 games, Navarro contributed 6.4 points on average and 2.1 assists while nailing 31 percent of her attempts from beyond three-point range.
As the fourth player returning from last year's squad with starting experience, Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) has recovered from her season-ending injury last year and will potentially start as a shooting wing for the Lady Eagles her senior year. Limited to only eight games before her injury, Whitney averaged 23 minutes of play and hit 81 percent of her free throw attempts last season.
The Barons bring an overall record of 1-1 into Friday night's contest. Brewton-Parker opened its season November 6 against Webber International as part of the BPC Tip Off Classic. The Barons were victorious opening night, grabbing a 77-56 win over Webber International before dropping a 58-70 decision to Warner University the next night.
Homecoming Events: In preparation for Homecoming Weekend, November 13-15, the Lady Eagles will be participating in the Eagle Rally on Thursday (November 12). The coaching staff and select players will be at the Rally, which begins promptly at 7 p.m. in the parking lot of Paulson Stadium.
