ACWORTH, GA – Only six matches finished on the opening day of the Kennesaw State Invitational before inclement weather forced a suspension of the remaining matches. Three Eagles earned singles victories in the morning, while three were left on the court at the Governors Towne Club. Ali Beavers, Kristi Kegerreis and Ashley Hungerford all captured wins before the rain came. Play will resume Saturday morning at 8 a.m. finishing the matches that were suspended first.
Junior Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) grabbed a first round win over Angela McGahee of Murray State. Beavers took a close first set, 7-5, before taking the second by a 6-4 decision. Senior Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) crushed host Kennesaw State's Alena Sergeychik, 6-1,6-0. Hungerford (Clearwater, Fla.), competing as a junior, garnered a straight-set victory over Ayano Tanaka, also of Kennesaw State. Hungerford captured the win with 6-3, 6-4 set decisions. The final Eagle to complete a match on the opening day, Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) dropped a third-set super tiebreaker to Cassidy Cunitz of Murray State. Rolle rebounded from dropping the first set, 6-3, to take the second, 7-5, and force a third set tiebreak. Rolle held strong, but fell, 10-8, as Cunitz secured the match win.
Allison Beeler, Jessica Fuller and Christine Caforio will all take the court at 8 a.m. Saturday to open the second day of play, weather permitting, after their matches were suspended.
