Eagles Collect Wins on Opening Day of Crimson Tide Fall Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On the opening day of the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational, Juan Melian-Puigventos and Mark Paetz collected opening round wins. The Georgia Southern men's tennis team concludes its fall tournament schedule at the invitational played at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Kicking off singles play for the Eagles in the 'A' draw, Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) discarded Radford's Igor Ogrizek in straight-sets. The freshman Eagle handled Ogrizek, 6-4, to take the early match lead and downed the Highlander, 6-3, in the second set to secure the win. With the win, Puigventos moved into the quarterfinal round to take on Tennessee's JP Smith, the No. 1 seed in the draw and No. 2 singles player in the country according the preseason ITA Intercollegiate rankings. Smith took the quarterfinal match, 6-1, 6-4.
Representing Georgia Southern in the 'B' draw, senior Justin Flynn (Dublin, Ireland) challenged host school Alabama's own Michael Davis. Flynn suffered a straight-set loss to Davis, falling 6-1, 6-4. Flynn then moved into the back draw to face Julien Roussel of USM, where Roussel edged Flynn, 6-4, 6-2. Competing in the 'D' draw, Sebastien Felt (Vienna, Austria) dropped a straight-set decision to Radford's Brett Cromwell. Cromwell picked up the singles nod, 6-4, 6-1, as Felt took on Ethan Frankel of Tulane in the consolation round. The freshman secured a come-from-behind three-set win over Frankel in the back draw. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Felt bounced Frankel in the final two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Felt received a quarterfinal bye and will face Thomas Bellman (Jacksonville State) in the semifinals.
The final singles competitor for the Eagles, Paetz (Munich, Germany) earned a spot in the quarterfinal round after dismissing Jacksonville State's Felipe Watanabe. Paetz won the early round in a tight tiebreak with a 7-6(6) decision only to crush Watanabe in the second set, 6-1. In the quarterfinal round, the junior challenged Dan Cornei of UAB, but fell 6-2, 6-0.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. (CST), but is subject to change due to the threat of inclement weather.
