STATESBORO, Ga. - Mike Gubosh (Evans, Ga.) set a career high with seven saves in front of a season-high crowd, but the Georgia Southern men's soccer team (0-8-1, 0-1-0) falls in the SoCon opener to Davidson (8-1-0, 2-0-0) 3-0.
The match opened with the Wildcats controlling the ball, recording five shots in the first 10 minutes. The Eagles' defense stepped up and kept them from scoring, blocking two shots and recording two saves.
Gubosh made a third save in the 13th minute on a well-placed header by Mark Millard.
Georgia Southern moved the ball into Davidson territory and took two corner kicks in the 20th and 21st minutes; however, minutes later Charlie Reiter notched his sixth goal of the season off a pass from Millard.
The Eagles went back on the attack after the goal. Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) launched a shot that just missed the net and went over the top in the 24th minute.
Gubosh denied Reiter of a second goal in the 33rd minute, making a nice save.
Georgia Southern had a great chance in the 40th minute after a shot from Cox rebounded off the goalie. David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.) took a shot on target, but Chip Sanders came up with the save.
Davidson recorded its second goal in the 43rd minute. Christian Hambleton scored off a pass from Machel Turner.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a third goal in the 55th minute. Yannick Pilgrim scored off a cross from Mark Millard.
Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) had his shot blocked in the 75th minute. Adam Guediri (Marietta, Ga.) and Muhamed Sidibeh (Gambia) both took shots minutes later to keep the Eagles on the attack.
The Eagles return to action Saturday at Gardner-Webb in a 1 p.m. match.
