Preseason Notebook: Eagles Look Deep After First Week of Practice

STATESBORO, GA – After one full week of practice, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team has started to intensify the practice schedule, hitting on different areas of the game each day. With seven newcomers vying for playing time, head coach Rusty Cram is pleased to see the level of intensity the players are showing.
“I love their hustle. The young ladies are working hard,” stated Cram. “We certainly have some conditioning left to do and we are nowhere near game shape. But they are learning three to four new things every day and it's tough to keep their focus. But with 11 freshmen and sophomores, they are going through the learning process, and having to put it all together.”
The Lady Eagles continue to hone their fundamentals before their first scrimmage this weekend. An experienced returning class should bring added depth to the squad, which Cram finds a pleasant surprise at this early stage.
“I think we are going to be deeper than what I expected. I think for the first time in awhile, the freshmen are not going to have to produce early for us to come out strong. Our upperclassmen will be able to carry us early so our freshmen can get acquainted with this level of competition,” Cram said. “So I'm more surprised with the depth that I think we are going to have more than anything else.”
The seven newcomers, including six of whom are freshmen, are slowly finding their footing on the team. Developing at different paces, Cram is pleased with what he has seen so far.
“They all come in different paces. A couple of them are picking things up quicker and a couple are having to learn some different things,” said Cram on the freshmen class after the first week of practice. “I don't expect them all to be on the same page right now. But they are getting there, it will just take time.”
Right now, I'd say we are 7-8 deep and we want to be 9-10 deep. That's what we will look for from our freshmen class.”
The 2009-2010 Lady Eagles open the new season, Friday, November 13th of Homecoming Weekend against Brewton-Parker. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
Season tickets for the 2009-2010 women's basketball season are on sale at $50 for a general admission pass. A flex plan, which includes five tickets that may be used at any home game, can be purchased for $25. Single-game tickets for adults are $8, while youth single-game tickets (ages 3-12) are priced at $4.
