Garrido Advances at Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship

ATHENS, GA – Sophomore Alain Garrido handled Georgia's Alex Hill in convincing sets Friday afternoon in the opening round of singles action of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship. Garrido will represent the Georgia Southern men's tennis team in the Round of 32 with the straight-set win. The Regional Championship is being played on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Advancing from the qualifying round, Hill, a senior Georgia Bulldog, took only two games in the first set from Garrido, as the Bulldog fell, 6-2, to Garrido to drop to a one set disadvantage. Garrido (Vigo, Spain) took the match with a 6-4 second set win, advancing to the second round where he will face Georgia Tech's Elliot Potvin Saturday at 11 a.m.
With a decisive win in the qualifying round over Georgia Tech's Doug Kenny, Matthijs Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) challenged Waylon Chin of Miami in the main draw. The opponents traded points, forcing an opening set tiebreak. Verdam battled hard, but fell in the tiebreak, 7-6(6). Chin carried the momentum into the final set, taking it, 6-4. Verdam faces Florida Gulf Coast's Matt Rock in the consolation round of 32, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Dropping a tough decision to South Florida's Thomas Estrada, senior Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) forced an opening set tiebreak, but fell 7-3, and dropped the second set, 6-2. Bekkers moved into the back draw and will face Hector Nieto of Miami at 2 p.m.
After garnering a 6-3,6-0 qualifying win over Evandro Rosindo of Mercer to move into main draw action, senior Justin Flynn (Dublin, Ireland) dropped a straight set decision to Carlos Cueto of Florida. Cueto, ranked No.11 in the country in the ITA Preseason Polls, captured a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Flynn. Flynn challenges Anderson Reed of Florida State in the consolation draw at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
The final singles competitor for Georgia Southern, Juan Melian-Puigventos drew a three-set match against Borja Malo of Georgia. The Eagle quickly rebounded from yielding the first set, 6-2, for a second set tiebreak win, 7-6(4). Puigventos and Malo battled to the last point in the final set, forcing a tiebreak. Malo grabbed the victory with a 7-6(5) third set win. Puigventos will take on Georgia Tech's Austin Roebuck at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the consolation draw.

Garrido and Puigventos paired up to face the No.2 doubles tandem in the country of Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt of Georgia. The Eagles displayed a strong performance, taking four games from the Bulldogs, before falling, 8-4. Bekkers and Verdam suffered a tough defeat to Florida Atlantic's Marc Abdelnour and George Matschke. The Eagle tandem fell, 8-6, to the Owls.
The second day of action will commence Saturday at 9 a.m. with quarterfinal doubles action to be followed by the second round of singles action at 11 a.m.
