Preseason Notebook: Women?s Basketball Season Set for Kick-Off

STATESBORO, GA – The 2009-2010 Georgia Southern women's basketball season will kick off Friday, October 16, with “Meet the Basketball Eagles” and “Eagle Basketball Fan Fest” beginning at 7:30 p.m. with the Eagle Rally. The first official day of practice for the 2009-2010 squad is Oct. 16.
The “Meet the Basketball Eagles” and “Eagle Basketball Fan Fest” will take place inside Hanner Fieldhouse from 8 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. The 2009-2010 Eagles men's and women's teams will be introduced and head coaches Rusty Cram and Charlton Young will address the crowd with a preseason pep talk.
“We are extremely excited about getting our season underway with “Meet the Eagles” on Friday night,” said head coach Rusty Cram. “It will be a great night to get our fans involved and excited about basketball season and introduce them to seven new faces on our team. It should be very entertaining, lots of fun and a great chance for everyone to get acquainted with our student-athletes in a relaxed environment.”
The Eagle Rally will kick off the evening at 7:30 p.m. in front of Hanner Fieldhouse. Following the Eagle Rally, the “Eagle Basketball Fan Fest” will take place from 8 p.m.- 9 p.m. On tap for the event will be a dunk contest judged by GSU students and three-point shooting competition between the men's and women's teams. Any fan in attendance to the event can challenge the Eagles in a three-point contest between the men's and women's teams against Georgia Southern students. In addition to the contests, the Georgia Southern pep band, Eagle cheerleaders and GSU will entertain fans.
Fans can participate in raffles to win jerseys, T-shirts and signed basketballs and Georgia Southern T-shirts will be thrown into the stands throughout the evening. Free pizza slices from Domino's will be given to the first 1,000 individuals in attendance.
The night will culminate with autograph sessions from both teams with “Meet the Basketball Eagles” from 9 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Available for the first time will be the 2009-2010 basketball schedule cards and posters. All events are free and open to the public.
Fans will also have the chance to secure their season tickets for the upcoming women's basketball season. The new season for the Lady Eagles kicks off at home on Friday, Nov. 13th of Homecoming weekend when Georgia Southern hosts Brewton-Parker at 5 p.m. Season tickets for the 2009-2010 season are $50 for general admission. A flex plan, which includes five tickets that may be used at any home game, can be purchased for $25. Single-game tickets for adults are $8, while youth single-game tickets (ages 3-12) are priced at $4.

The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles return 10 letterwinners from a 2008-09 squad that went 16-14 overall and 11-9 in Southern Conference action. Seven newcomers join the team in six freshmen and a transfer-junior.
Highlighting the returning class are seniors Jessica Geiger, J'Lisia Ogburn, Carolyn Whitney and Elise Whitney. Ogburn returns as the leading scorer from 2008-09 as she averaged 9.7 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Right behind Ogburn, Geiger recorded an impressive junior campaign picking up 5.3 rebounds on average along with 6.7 points. Whitney returns for her senior year after being sidelined most of the 2008-09 season due to injury.
As the lone returning junior, Jamie Navarro picked up the starting point guard position last season due to Whitney's injury. Navarro (Naples, Fla.) averaged 6.4 points per game and 2.1 assists along with Geiger.
The 2009-2010 schedule kicks off at home but then sees the Lady Eagles hit the road for five consecutive which includes trips to Duke and Auburn and a Thanksgiving tournament in Boulder, Colo. Georgia Southern will be one of four teams to participate in the 23rd Annual Coors Challenge, November 27-28. The Eagles will host 13 schools in Hanner Fieldhouse throughout the course of the 2009-2010 campaign.
A change in venue brings both the men's and women's Southern Conference Championships to Charlotte, N.C. to be contested March 4-8, closing out the 2009-2010 basketball season.
