Eagles Conclude UNF Fall Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Kristi Kegerreis and freshman Taylor Jones advanced to the quarterfinals of the 'A' and 'C' back draws respectively, while teammate Ashley Hungerford made a run to the quarterfinals of 'B' singles at the UNF Invitational (October 9-11). The Eagles concluded the three-day tournament on Sunday.

Doubles action opened the tournament as five Eagle pairs teamed up in the single elimination format. In flight 'A', Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Natalie Maffett (Rome, Ga.) received a first round bye to take on Troy's Kelly Irving and Lauren Simpson in round two. The Eagle pair battled hard and pushed the match into a tiebreak, but suffered a tough loss to the Troy pair, 9-8 (5).  Also receiving a first round bye, teammate Hungerford paired with Kegerreis to face UAB's Brittany DeFelice and Giorgia Romeo. The Eagles ousted their opponents, 8-3, to advance to the quarterfinals where they faced Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt of Troy. The Eagle pair picked up two games, but dropped an 8-2 decision to the Trojan tandem.

In 'B' doubles action, Ali Beeler (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) battled North Florida's Lauren Holton and Heather St. John in the opening round, but suffered an 8-3 loss. Jones and Alexandra Langmo also fell in the first round to USC Upstate's Sofia Camberos and Catherine Stupinan, 8-4. Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) grabbed a first round tilt over North Florida's Melanie Aguirre and Victoria Krook, 8-6, and advanced to the quarterfinals after surpassing Taylor Dubins and Megan Matter, 8-4. Fuller and Rolle withdrew from the quarterfinal match due to injury.

Competing in flight 'A' singles were Eagles Kegerreis, Rolle and Beavers. Senior Kegerreis opened singles action falling to Coastal Carolina's Laurel Bolesky in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Advancing to the quarterfinals of the back draw, Kegerreis handed Eva Hankova (Bethune-Cookman) a straight set 6-3 defeat before receiving a second round bye. Kegerreis faced Farah Leclercq (Florida Gulf Coast) in the quarters, but fell, 6-4, 7-5.

Rolle dropped a three-set first round decision to North Florida's Aline Berkenbrock. The Osprey took the first set, 6-2, but Rolle rebounded grabbing the second by the same score. Playing a third set, Berkenbrock took the match with a 6-2 third set victory. Rolle withdrew in the back draw to Katya Zapadlova of Indiana due to an injury. Completing the Eagle trio in flight 'A', Beavers succumbed to Indiana's Evgeniya Vertesheva, 6-2, 6-0 to move into the back draw, where she withdrew to Karoline Grymel of Troy.

Competing in flight 'B' singles, senior Fuller suffered a tough three-set battle to North Florida's Lauren Holton in the opening round. Fuller crushed Holton in the second set, 6-0, after dropping a first set tiebreak loss. The Osprey secured the match with a 7-5 third set win. Fuller withdrew from the back draw.

Junior Hungerford made a run in 'B' singles to the quarterfinals, dropping two opponents along the way. Hungerford opened competition with a dominating 6-2, 6-4 win over Morgan Bechtel (Florida Gulf Coast) before dropping Kristin Lewis of Southern Conference foe Samford, 6-1, 7-6(8) to reach the round of 8. Hungerford battled Victoria Krook (North Florida) for the quarterfinal win, taking the match into a third set. The Eagle dropped the first set, 6-4, but rebounded in the second by an identical score to force a deciding third set. The opponents kept the set close, until Krook overcame Hungerford, 10-8.

Taking on Krista Cole of UAB in flight 'C' singles, Jones moved into the back draw after falling 6-2, 6-0 to Cole. Jones advanced to the quarterfinals of the back draw after Jeneice Ward of Bethune-Cookman withdrew and the Eagle received a second round bye. Jones then faced Jen Evans (Florida Gulf Coast), but suffered a straight set 6-1 defeat.

Maffett advanced from the opening round when her opponent withdrew, but fell in the second to Emma Smith of Troy, 6-4, 6-1, as teammate Langmo opened singles competition with a straight set win over Catherine Stupinan of USC Upstate, 6-2, 6-3. Langmo took the first set over Brittany Davis (Bethune-Cookman) and held the second set lead, 3-2, before Davis retired, advancing Langmo to the quarterfinals. Facing Maria Camberos (Coastal Carolina) in the round of 8, Langmo battled, but fell 6-3, 6-2 to the Chanticleer.

Georgia Southern returns to the court at the ITA Regional, October 22-26 in Athens, Ga., before closing out the fall campaign at the Kennesaw Fall Classic, October 30-31.
