STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern men's tennis team will open its 2009 dual match season on Sunday, February 1, when it welcomes Hampton to Statesboro. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
“We want to get off to a good start to the season,” said head coach Justin Miles. “And I am expecting our seniors to step up as good role models for the younger guys on the team.”
The Eagles concluded 2008 with a 9-13 overall record, 4-5 in the Southern Conference and reached the second round of the SoCon Tournament. They return seven lettermen from last season's squad and add five highly anticipated newcomers. Returning starters from 2008 are spearheaded by seniors Joris De Weerdt of Mortsel, Belgium; Philip Prins of Cape Town, South Africa; and Matthew Sands of Nassau, The Bahamas.
Georgia Southern will look to capitalize on a successful fall campaign. One of the many highlights from the fall tournament season was the doubles tandem of De Weerdt and Sands who captured the doubles title at the UNF Fall Invitational in October.
The Eagles defeated Hampton in the 2008 season by a 6-1 decision. Georgia Southern captured the doubles point, which proved to be a crucial component to the season, and took five singles matches to secure the win.
