Georgia Southern Opens 2009 Dual Season at Georgia State

STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern women's tennis team is set to open its 2009 dual match season with two road trips beginning on Saturday, January 24. The Lady Eagles first travel to Georgia State to face the Panthers at 1 p.m. and then head to Kennesaw State for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday against the Owls.
“I am excited to begin a new season this weekend as we travel to Atlanta to face two in state rivals,” said head coach Amy Bonner. “I am looking to my seniors, Shea Huxtable, Emma Knight, and Molly Maddox to provide leadership for our team. I believe that they will be prepared to compete and eager to win as they kick off their last season of their college tennis career.”
The Lady Eagles completed a successful fall campaign that was highlighted by sophomore Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) reaching the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga. Beavers bypassed Daniela Vuckadinovic of Auburn and Stephanie Viera of Troy en route to the semifinal match where she faced off against Mississippi State's Natalie Mayuk.
Georgia Southern faced both weekend opponents last season, going 1-1. The Lady Eagles fell in a close match to Georgia State, 5-2, but captured their first victory of the season at Kennesaw State, sweeping the Owls, 7-0. Beavers and Jessica Fuller each captured singles wins for the Eagles against Georgia State, while Beavers also teamed with Melanie Rolle to earn a doubles win at the two seed.
“We have faced Georgia State numerous times over the fall and they have a talented team,” said Bonner. “We fell last year in a close 5-2 match. I expect a good competitive match and it will be a good start to prepare us for our upcoming season.”
Georgia Southern rounded out the 2008 dual season with an 11-11 record and advanced to the second round of the Southern Conference tournament.
