Georgia Southern Hits the Road for Two Conference Match-ups

STATESBORO, GA ? The Georgia Southern Lady Eagles basketball team hits the road for two Southern Conference games starting with Furman on Saturday, January 17, followed by College of Charleston on Monday (Jan. 19). Tip-off in McKenzie Arena on Saturday is slated for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on CSS. College of Charleston tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Monday in Carolina First Center.
The Lady Eagles enter the contest on Saturday with a 10-7 overall record and a 5-3 conference mark after defeating Wofford (Jan. 12) in a comfortable fashion, 70-48. J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) led Georgia Southern in scoring, chipping in a team-high 17 points, which was also good enough to tie her career-high. Freshman Brittney Nelson (Rochester, Mich.) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in the game, leading the Eagles in the rebounding battle. Georgia Southern shot 42 percent from the floor, 50 percent in the opening half. Wofford shot a mere 23 percent.
Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring is senior Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.), who averages 12.8 points per game. Melson is followed by Ogburn with 10.4 points per game, who also is leading the team with 5.9 rebounds per game.
Furman (10-8, 4-5) is coming off a 52-58 loss to first year conference foe Samford on its home court (Jan. 14). The Paladins were led by Melissa Liebschwager, who poured in a team-high 16 points. Sarah Baker led Furman in rebounding, securing 12.
The Paladins' Lee Stephens paces the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game and is followed by Liebschwager, who averages 12.6 points per game. Katie Johnson and Baker each lead Furman in rebounding, averaging 5.9 boards per contest.
Georgia Southern and Furman have met 41 times, with the Lady Eagles claiming a 24-17 all-time series edge over the Paladins. The Lady Eagles captured both regular season games over Furman last season.
College of Charleston is currently 10-5, 4-4, but will face Wofford on Saturday (Jan. 17) before hosting the Lady Eagles on Monday. The Cougars are led in scoring by Tonia Gerty with 11.8 points per game and Sarah Moye, who pulls down 7.1 rebounds per game.
