Statesboro, Ga-The Georgia Southern men's tennis team concluded its first tournament of the 2007-2008 season, Sunday, at the Quality Inn/Georgia Southern Invitational, held at the Hanner Fieldhouse Tennis Courts.
In singles A action, Junior Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belguim (Endeavour) defeats The Citadel's Frederic Petrilli (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) to move on the quarterfinals where Bekkers is defeated by Federico Levi of North Florida. Senior Matthew Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) suffers a first round defeat by North Florida's Graham Edgar (6-3, 6-2) to send him to the Consolation A Singles Bracket where he lost to Evandro Rosindo of ABAC (4-6, 7-5, 5-7). Senior Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belguim (St. Gabriel)) defeated Graham Edgar of North Florida (6-3, 6-2) to advance to the finals where he was defeated by Federico Levi (1-6, 4-6).
In the singles B bracket, Freshman Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) defeats Matthew Holland of ABAC (4-6, 6-0, 7-5). Sophomore Derrick Davison (Peachtree City, GA) suffered a first round defeat. Davison lost in the first round to Mark Gattiker of North Florida (3-6, 0-6).
Freshman Edio Castanhel (Criciuma, Brazil) defeated the Citadel's Derek Dickey (6-1, 6-4) In the quarterfinals Castanhel lost to Mark Gattiker of North Florida (6-3, 6-2).
In single C action, Senior Philip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa) is defeated by Marc Misanovic of North Florida (5-7, 6-2, 6-7(1)) in the first round. Sophomore Wesley Powell (Bainbridge, Ga.) is also defeated in the first round by Ronnie Sang of North Florida (0-6, 3-6). Senior Alonso Rodriguez (Lima, Peru) advances to the quarterfinals by defeating the Citadel's Tripp Larkin (6-0, 6-2).
In the Singles C Consolation Bracket Prins defeats Josh Cook of the Citadel (6-0 6-3) advancing him to the finals. It was a Georgia Southern showdown for the consolation final as Prins takes on Powell. Prins would take the final in straight sets (6-0, 6-0)
In doubles A action, the team of Weerdt and Sands fall to University of North Florida's Levi and Misanovic (4-8) in the A quarterfinals. Bekkers and Prins teamed up play North Florida's Kurt Gattiker Marcos Chiaretti where they lost (3-8). There will be a Georgia Southern Showdown for the Doubles A Consolation final as Weerdt and Sands face off against Bekkers and Prins on Monday September 22.
In the doubles bracket B, Powell and ABAC's Matthew Holland teamed up to face North Florida's Ronnie Sang and Graham Edgar were defeated (3-8). Rodriguez and Davison were defeated by the Citadel's Tripp Larkin and Derek Dickey (5-8). After a bye in the first round Castanhel and Garrido are defeated by Sang and Edgar of North Florida (6-8).
In the doubles consulation bracket B, Rodriguez and Davison suffer a lost to Roindo and Perez of ABAC (3-8) Castanhel and Garrido defeat fellow eagle Powel and ABAC's Matthew Holland (8-2) advancing to the finals where they would be defeated by Roindo and Perez of ABAC (9-8(3)).
