Chattanooga Wins SoCon Championship

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Chattanooga rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one then exploded for nine runs in the fifth in game two to win the 2008 Southern Conference Softball Tournament championship over Georgia Southern Saturday.
The Lady Mocs won the opener 3-2 and clinched the title with a 10-1 victory.
The Eagles end their season at 37-30, the second-most wins in school history.
“It was a frustrating day,” said GSU head coach Natalie Poole. “I thought that we came out with the intent to win, we were there, we were ready, and I felt like it just didn't happen for us. At times we pitched well, at times we didn't and we just couldn't put together an offensive rally to make it happen for ourselves.”
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada), junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) and sophomore Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, a two-out walk to Laci Upchurch started a nine-run outburst. Ten straight batters reached base, including a two-run homer from Tara Temby and a three-run shot from Toni Hutchison.
“I feel like sometimes when you lose momentum, you lose it ? it doesn't matter who's throwing, who's pitching or who's playing ? they just get on it, they see the ball and that's it,” said Poole.
To force a deciding game, the Lady Mocs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, getting a bases-loaded, walk-off single from Michelle Fuzzard.
Georgia Southern led 2-0 after the third on a wild pitch and a RBI single from sophomore Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.).
Chattanooga answered in the fifth with a run-scoring single from Lauren Flores.
Not only did the Eagles claim the second-most wins ever, they set numerous offensive records including batting average (.292), runs (314) and home runs (44). A school-record eight players were named to the All-SoCon teams and Siliga was the league's player of the year.
“I'm very proud of them,” said Poole. “I thought we had a good year, we broke quite a few records and showed quite a few positive tendencies. I definitely look forward to our returners coming back next year but I'm definitely proud of them.”
