Eagles Notch All-Conference Honors

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? As announced this afternoon by the Southern Conference, Eagles Emmanuel Nkoueleue, Borja Malet, Gregory Bekkers and Philip Prins earned Second-Team All-Conference accolades.
Topping off the list, Emmanuel Nkoueleue tabbed Second-Team All-Conference for both singles and doubles. Nkoueleue, the lone senior of the team, earned all-conference for the No. 1 singles position. Nkoueleue has shown tremendous leadership for the Eagles on and off the court as the lone senior.
“He's been a great leader on and off the court for teammates,” said head coach Justin Miles. “He worked very hard in the summer and that proved a lot about him and his determination. And that showed when he came back in the fall. His results spoke for itself this year in doubles and singles.”
On the court, Nkoueleue is posting a 20-12 overall singles record, ten of those wins coming in dual action. Nkoueleue has recorded two victories over ranked opponents this dual season. The first came over No. 96 Sandy Franz of USC Upstate. Nkoueleue handled Franz with a 6-3,6-3 straight set victory. Following soon after, Nkoueleue upset No. 56 Olivier Sajour of Florida Atlantic University in the same fashion as Franz, in straight 6-3 sets.
In addition, the Douala, Cameroon native earned doubles all-conference distinction with partner Borja Malet, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain. Over the course of the 2007-08 season, Malet and Nkoueleue compiled an 18-10 overall record, 12-6 dual record and 5-3 against SoCon foes at the No. 1 seed. The Eagle tandem went on a six match win streak for a month before falling to Elon's Gooch/Nemec. The duo post the greatest doubles record for the team.
“They've been a great doubles team during the year for us,” said Miles. “They work well together and show lots of energy on the court which is one of the most important things in college tennis. They display positive emotion and never show negative emotion, which has been a great leadership quality for our team.”
Earning a doubles all-conference bid for the three seed position were Gregory Bekkers and Philip Prins. Bekkers, a Antwerp, Belgium sophomore, and Prins, a Cape Town, South Africa junior, have posted an 9-6 overall doubles record, 9-4 in dual action. The tandem has not dropped a match since March 17 when they fell to Saint Mary's Zannoni/Bouzkouri. Since then, the pair has won eight straight, including todays first round Southern Conference Championships win. The Eagle duo continued their win streak posting an 8-5 win over Taylor Befus and William John of UNC Greensboro.
“They got off to a bit of a slow start in the beginning, but then started playing a lot better,” stated Miles. “It started against College of Charleston when they gained some confidence, and have been rolling ever since. The Charleston match was good for them because they earned some extra confidence in tight matches and since then, they have been great.”
The Georgia Southern men's tennis team continues action in the Southern Conference tournament Friday afternoon. The Eagles face the No. 2 seed Elon at 12:30 p.m.
