STATESBORO, Ga. -- Georgia Southern athletic training graduate assistant Derek Lawrance is set to intern with Major League Soccer's DC United.
“It's definitely an incredible opportunity for me because it's with a professional soccer team and it's an internship that I've been wanting since my senior year as an undergrad,” said Lawrance.
The internship, which will begin April 14, will last three months. Lawrance will be responsible for serving as an assistant athletic trainer with the first team, in addition to providing game coverage for both the reserve team and youth academy.
“The reason why it is such a great opportunity for me is because it's the level that I want to be working at,” added Lawrance. “Hopefully it will lead to a job in the MLS in the future.”
A second-year graduate student in the Exercise Science program at Georgia Southern, Lawrance will leave Statesboro and take with him the experience he's gained while working as the athletic trainer for the GSU men's soccer team since 2006.
“It's given me the privilege of working with the men's soccer team both years,” said Lawrance of his time spent with Eagle soccer. “Working with them has helped enhance my skills to go on and work at a higher level.”
Upon completion of the internship, the Roanoke, Va. native will complete his requirements to earn his master's degree.
