Georgia Southern Falls To No. 66 Elon, 6-1

ELON, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern men's tennis team fell in a tough battle Friday afternoon to No. 66 Elon, 6-1, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Eagles dropped to 5-6 on the season overall and 1-2 in conference action. The Phoenix improved to 10-3 overall and remained undefeated in conference play, going 5-0.
Elon won two of three doubles matches to seize the team point and jump off to a 1-0 start. Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands were victorious for the Eagles at the three seed. The duo downed Chase Helpingstine and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell by an 8-4 margin. This was the Eagle tandem's first pairing of the season and thus their first dual victory.
The Phoenix clinched the match in singles action, sweeping five seeds to clinch the match 5-0. Borja Malet claimed Georgia Southern's only point in the afternoon. Malet defeated Alberto Rojas at the four seed in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 10-6. With the win, the Barcelona, Spain sophomore improved to 9-11 overall and 5-5 in dual action.
Georgia Southern is back in action Saturday afternoon at the College of Charleston. Doubles action is set to begin at 1 p.m.
