Softball Picked Second, Three Named to Preseason SoCon Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The Georgia Southern softball team was picked to finish second and three players were named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference team, the league announced Wednesday.
The Eagles were tied for second with the College of Charleston. Defending champion Chattanooga was first, garnering six first-place votes.
Sophomore Lindsey Hopkins (McDonough, Ga.) was selected to the first team and sophomores Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) and Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) were named to the second team.
Hopkins led the team last season with a .272 average, 35 runs, 55 hits and 18 stolen bases. Her stolen base total ranked seventh in the SoCon.
Side started all 61 games as a freshman and paced the team in home runs (9), runs batted in (27) and slugging percentage (.434). Her nine homers are tied for second at Georgia Southern in a single season. She was also named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
Russo joined Side on the all-tournament team after she tied for the team lead with a .375 average and six RBI. Russo started 46 times and recorded three home runs and 16 RBI.
The Eagles posted a 29-32 record in 2007 and went 9-11 in league play. The team advanced to the championship game of the SoCon Tournament after losing its opening game.
