Women?s Basketball to Close Regular Season at App State

BOONE, N.C. - Georgia Southern will conclude regular season action at Appalachian State, Saturday afternoon (Mar. 1) with a 1 p.m. tip-off at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C. The Lady Eagles are looking to stop a three-game skid and complete the season-sweep over the Mountaineers before heading into the Southern Conference Tournament next weekend.
With a 16-12 overall and 12-5 SoCon record, the Lady Eagles are looking to both bounce back after falling to Davidson, Thursday night (Feb. 28), at Hanner Fieldhouse, and possibly gain the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament.
Georgia Southern and Davidson are now tied with a 12-5 league record, but because Davidson completed the series sweep over GSU, the Wildcats have the advantage going into this weekend's final games. If GSU defeats Appalachian State, and Davidson loses to College of Charleston, then Georgia Southern would claim the third seed going into the tournament. Otherwise, the Lady Eagles will hold the fourth seed and will match up with the number five seed, Saturday (Mar. 8).
Appalachian State recently fell to College of Charleston in Boone, dropping a 72-63 decision to the Cougars (Feb. 28), and with the loss, fell to 8-20 overall and 5-12 in SoCon play.
Georgia Southern claims a 27-12 all-time series advantage over the Mountaineers, last defeating ASU earlier in the season at Hanner Fieldhouse in December by a 72-58 margin. In that game, Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) and Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) combined for 30 points to pace the team. ASU's Whitney Randolph dropped 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers. The Lady Eagles have won two straight over the Mountaineers and hold a 13-3 lead in games played in Boone. The last time ASU defeated the Lady Eagles was last season in Statesboro, capping a three-game win streak over GSU.
Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring is senior guard Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) with 11.1 points per game, which is ninth-best in the conference. She is followed by classmate guard Atwood with 9.8 points per contest, who is also leading the team with 5.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) dishes out a team-high 3.15 assists per game, which ranks sixth in the conference.
Pacing the Mountaineers in scoring is Whitney Tossie with 13.2 points per game. She is also the team-leader in steals (3.0) and assists (2.6) per contest. Teammate Brittany Mixon pulls down a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game.
A 1985 graduate of Louisiana Tech, head coach Rusty Cram is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles and carries a 183-163 career and school record.
Appalachian State head coach Adrienne Shuler, a 1992 graduate of Georgia, carries a 63-108 school and career record in her 6th year at the helm of the Mountaineers.
