STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern returns to conference play against Elon Saturday at 2 p.m. in Alumni Gym at Burlington, N.C.
The Lady Eagles (5-2, 1-0) won their first conference game of the season Monday against Appalachian State 69-53. Three players scored in double-figures in the win.
Georgia Southern defeated High Point 80-69 in their latest contest. Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) tied her career high of 24 points in her third 20+ point performance of the year. The senior guard leads the team with 15.9 points per game.
The Lady Eagles not only tied but also broke career highs Wednesday night in High Point, N.C. Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) set a new career high in points with seven. Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) broke her previous high in assists when she dished out 10 in the win, and Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) pulled down 12 rebounds for a new career best.
The Elon Phoenix are 1-6 (0-1) under first year head coach Karen Barefoot. The Phoenix won their season opener but have lost six straight including two overtime games. Elon faced UNC Greensboro Tuesday in the conference opener and lost 45-39.
Urysla Cotton leads the team with 9.3 points per game and scored 25 in the 85-80 double overtime loss to Weber State (11/29); however, Greensboro held her in check and she only scored two points. Amber Wall pulled down a career high 18 boards in the loss and averages 8.4 a game.
Georgia Southern is 6-4 all-time against the Phoenix and swept the two game series last season.
