Eagles Head to FIU Sun & Fun Classic in Miami

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team wraps up 2008 by heading to Miami, Fl. to participate in the FIU Sun & Fun Classic. Three additional teams will compete for the title, East Carolina University, Marist, and host Florida International University. The Lady Eagles open play December 29 against the host team, FIU. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. at FIU Arena.
Georgia Southern (7-4) takes a break from conference play when heading to Florida. In their last contest, the Lady Eagles defeated conference foe Western Carolina in a 62-50 fashion. Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) led the Eagles in scoring, chipping in a team-high 14 points. Freshman Brittney Nelson (Rochester, Mich.) followed closely behind with a career-high 13 points. Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Eagles in rebounding, clearing away eight.
The FIU Golden Panthers stand at 3-8 overall thus far in the season and are 2-4 on their home court. They outscored South Carolina State, 64-56, in their last game on Dec. 22 at home. Monika Bosilj scored a team-high 27 points and Jasmine Jenkins pulled down 11 rebounds. Bosilj leads the team overall in scoring, averaging 17.2 points per game.
The East Carolina Pirates (8-3) are led by LaCoya Terry, who averages 18.5 points per game. Jean Best carried the team in scoring against Florida Atlantic in their last contest; Best chipped in a team-high 19 points in the 68-63 win over FAU on Dec. 20. The Pirates captured the Bahamas Shootout Title with the win; they defeated Mercer before edging Florida Atlantic in the final.
Marist claims a 9-1 overall record this season and is 5-1 on the road thus far. The Red Foxes are led by Rachele Fitz who averages 22.8 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game. They are coming off a 48-45 win over St. Bonaventure (Dec. 20).
