STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team travels to High Point, N.C. to face the High Point Panthers Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Georgia Southern (4-2, 1-0 SoCon) opened conference play Monday with a 69-53 win against Appalachian State. Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) had her second 20+ point performance of the season in the win over the Mountaineers. The senior guard is averaging 14.5 points and 3.0 steals per game.
Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) continues to lead the team in rebounding with 6.2 a game. Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) is also a force on the boards and is tied for the team lead in offensive rebounds with 14.
Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) is making 85 percent of her free throws and leads the team in that category.
High Point (2-4) returns three starters from a team that went 15-15 last season. The Panthers are 2-0 at home this season with wins over Emory & Henry and George Mason. High Point defeated the Patriots 66-55 on Monday. They also faced SoCon foe UNC Greensboro and lost 74-69.
The Panthers have three scorers averaging double figures. Jurica Hargraves leads the team with 16 points per game and is shooting 52 percent from the field. Freshman Shamia Brown leads the team off the bench with 11.3 a game.
This will be the first meeting between High Point and Georgia Southern. The Lady Eagles have already defeated Big South member UNC Asheville 52-39 (11/22) this season.
The Lady Eagles will face SoCon foe Elon Saturday at 2 p.m in Alumni Gym.
