Ogburn Shines in Loss to UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Meeting for the 29th time Wednesday night (Dec. 17), the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles fell 71-53 to the UNC Greensboro Spartans at Fleming Gym. J'Lisia Ogburn recorded her second career double-double as the Eagles dropped to 6-4, 2-1, while the Spartans improved to 5-5, 3-0.
“J'Lisia [Ogburn] had the game of her life,” said head coach Rusty Cram. “She had a double-double which was the second in her career.”
The Eagles were scoreless through the first six minutes of the game as the Spartans jumped out with an 8-0 run. Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) scored the first field goal for the Eagles as the clock hit 12:43; Ogburn's field goal would be the only one by the Eagles for eight minutes of play until Jamie Navarro (Naples, FL) would nail a three to end the drought.
The Spartans continued to hold the Eagles at five points through the third media timeout, but the Lady Eagles erupted soon after. Two unanswered field goals from Candice Ivy (Roswell, Ga.) and a lay-up from Ogburn quickly snapped the Spartans double digit lead as the score stood at 20-16 at the fourth media timeout. Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) hit two from the charity stripe to cut the lead down to two with 2:34 left in the half; but a field goal by TaShama Banner would allow the Spartans to end the half leading, 22-18.
UNCG got into a little foul trouble early in the game, committing five fouls after seven minutes of play. They would head to the locker room at halftime with ten fouls to Georgia Southern's five. Navarro and Ivy led the Eagles in the first half, each contributing five points and Ogburn pulled down eight rebounds. Gini Grimsley led the Spartans at half chipping in six points, while Monique Floyd had four boards.
Early in the second half, a field goal by Navarro closed the lead to within two, 22-20, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Spartans answered everything from the Eagles. Georgia Southern kept the score within single digits through six minutes of play, but UNCG opened its lead to double digits following that.
Georgia Southern shot 32.8 percent from the field compared to UNCG's 43.1 percent. The Spartans scored 25 points off 24 turnovers committed by the Eagles - 14 in the first half. The Lady Eagles held a 44-31 edge on the glass over the Spartans. UNCG held the dominating edge at the charity stripe, going 22-31 overall, 18-25 in the second half. Amanda Leigh led the Spartans with 18 points and Floyd cleared away a team-high six rebounds.
Ogburn shined tonight for the Lady Eagles, netting 16 points and 15 rebounds. Before tonight, Ogburn's career high's were 14 points at Florida Atlantic (Nov. 17) and 10 rebounds against Chattanooga last season (Jan. 28).
“The upperclassmen were not getting it done tonight,” said Cram. “We were just not producing; the upperclassmen were not producing. We cannot rely on the freshman going into conference play as we did tonight. We have to step it up and get more physical.”
The Lady Eagles return to action and continue Southern Conference play when they travel to Western Carolina University. Tip-off in Cullowhee, N.C. is slated for 4 p.m.
