KENNESAW, Ga. - Despite Georgia Southern jumping off to a good start and leading midway through the first half, the Kennesaw State University Owls managed to outscore the Georgia Southern Eagles, 82-61, Monday night at KSU Convocation Center. The Lady Eagles dropped to 6-3 overall. Meanwhile, the Owls took their third straight game, improving to 3-4.
Georgia Southern led by 12-11 following the second media timeout, but a 3-pointer by Gia Lockett pushed Kennesaw State to their first lead of the game, 14-12. KSU would then go on a 7-0 run, with two turnovers from GSU to force an Eagle timeout at 9:26, leading 21-12. Samantha Williams (Kingsport, TN) nailed a three to end the Georgia Southern drought, 21-15, but it would be tough for the Eagles the rest of the way.
The Owls headed to the locker room with a comfortable 42-21 lead. Locket led the Owls in the first half, chipping in 24 of their 42 points, five three-pointers from beyond the arc. Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Eagles with seven points.
The Lady Eagles gained momentum at the start of the second half, going on an 8-0 run to pull within a 48-31 deficit at 18:10, but it wasn't enough. The Owls pulled away following a Georgia Southern timeout at 16:49 and would lead by +20 at the first media timeout.
Georgia Southern shot 32.8 percent from the field to Kennesaw's 47.8 percent. KSU forced the Eagles to 21 turnovers, scoring 28 points off them. Lockett scored a game-high 36 points, career high and Kennesaw Division I record.
It was a two way tie for top scorer for the Eagles. Williams and J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) both scored 12 points; Williams matched her career high tonight. Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) also scored in double digits, dropping in 10. Jamie Navarro pulled down a team high seven rebounds, matching her career high.
“We weren't here to play,” said head coach Rusty Cram. “They beat us at every aspect and we didn't step up; my hats off to Kennesaw tonight. They were here for a purpose and we weren't.”
Georgia Southern returns to Southern Conference play Wednesday (Dec. 17) night as it looks to rebound at UNC Greensboro. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
