Statesboro, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer team lost its conference opener against Elon 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles fall to 2-5-0 (0-1-0) after the loss, while Elon advances to 3-7-1 (2-0-0).
Georgia Southern held the Phoenix scoreless for most of the first half but allowed a goal in the 44th minute of action. Justin Wyatt scored off a pass from Clint Collins while freshman goalkeeper Mike Gubosh (Evans, Ga.) was on the ground.
The Eagles had opportunities to score in the first half. Georgia Southern had six shots on goal but were unable to place the ball in the net.
“The first half I felt like we played well. We had six shots on goal in the first half, but we made a terrible decision to give up the goal with two minutes left in the first half,” said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy.
Danny Hall (Conyers, Ga.) had one of the best opportunities to score when he made a diving header off of a corner kick pass from Joe Madigan (Centennial, Colo.).
Madigan finished the day with two shots on goal.
The Eagles scored quickly in the second half. Jarryd Nolette (Winermere, Fla.) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.) in the 48th minute of play.
“We came out and got a goal within five minutes of the start of the second half and I was really happy about that,” said Coach Kennedy.
Elon, however, scored two quick goals to go up 3-1. Erfan Imeni scored in the 50th minute of action off a pass from Justin Wyatt. Then in the 56th minute of play Aaron Parker scored his second goal of the season off of a rebound off of Gubosh’s glove.
Nolette finished the day with two shots on goal and one goal scored.
