Men's Tennis Compete In Crimson Tide Fall Championship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team competed in the Crimson Tide Fall Invitation at University of Alabama.
In the Bear Bryant singles bracket Senior Joris De Weerdt (Morsel, Belgium) was defeated by Mathieu Thibaudeau of Alabama 2-6, 2-6. He was also defeated by Alfredo Krywacz of Tennessee-Martin in the Bear Bryant Consulation 6-7; 2-6.
In the John Hannah singles bracket junior Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belguim) lost against Domagoj Anic of Southern Mississippi in three sets 7-6; 3-6; 4-6. Bekkers was also defeated in the consolation round by Krywacz 6-7, 2-6.
In the Johnny Musso singles bracket, freshman Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) was defeated by Kevin Fleck of Clemson in the first round. In the consolation round Garrido went on to defeated Andrew Poole of Southern Miss 6-2, 2-5 (Poole retired after illness in second set) in the first round of the consulaton bracket. Garrido defeated Troy State's Bastian Maucher 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals. Garrido is set to play in the Johnny Musso consolation finals Sunday (Oct. 26).
In the Bart Starr singles bracket sophomore Wesley Powell (Bainbridge) fell to Samford's Mathew Harris 3-6, 0-6 in the first round. He also lost to Jacksonville's Vinny Craveiro 5-7; 3-6 in the consolation round.
In the Steadman Shealy singles freshman Edio Castanhel (Criciuma, Brazil ) lost to Yannick Yoshizawa of South Florida 7-6, 1-6, 2-6. He was also defeated in the consolation round by Clemson's Ike Belk 0-6, 4-6.
In doubles action, Bekkers and Powell were defeated by Creighton Blanchard and Houssam Yassine of Alabama (2-8) in the white bracket.Also in the white bracket Garrido and Mark Paetz (Munich, Germany/Schiller International School) were defeated by David Henry and Charlie Ramsey of Memphis 3-8.
In the red doubles bracket Castanhel and De Weerdt lost to Clemson's Rok Bizjak and Gera Boryachinskly 5-8.
In the consolation doubles round Bekkers and Powell were defeated by Alabama's Andrew Felsenthal and John Lewis 3-8. Garrido and Paetz were also defeated by Strate Krstevski and Markus Wessingage of Southern Miss 5-8, and Castanhel and De Weerdt lost to Michelle Monteiro and Alex Petropolous of Auburn-Montgomery 4-8.
