Volleyball Continues Homestand Sunday and Monday

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern, winners of four straight matches, starts next week with home matches against Elon and UNC Greensboro.
The Eagles (11-11, 5-3) host Elon on Sunday at 2 p.m. and UNC Greensboro Monday night at 7 p.m.
Monday will be “Dig for the Cure” night, in an effort to raise awareness for cancer. GSU staff will be on hand to accept donations and all proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Fund.

“I think we're feeling good as far as confidence goes,” said GSU head coach Chad Callihan. “We know that there are some areas of weakness that we're working on daily and trying to get better. But our attitude is in the right place at this point in the season and the girls have been committed to coming in each day and picking out things we need to improve upon.”
GSU ran their win streak to four on Tuesday with a sweep of Davidson, recording a season-high .364 hitting percentage. The run is the longest by the program since starting the 2006 season with four straight wins.
“The win streak has helped our confidence immeasurably,” said Callihan. “I think the fashion that we got them ? we really had to compete for them, play in some really tight games and in critical situations. More than just getting the wins, just feeling confident about the way we got them and how we had to stay composed in those situations and play our best volleyball. Each match that we've won, that next match we've played, we've gotten a little bit stronger. Each match feeds the confidence for the next one.”
Elon (15-8, 4-3) play away from Alumni Gym for the first time in five matches when they face Davidson on Saturday before making the trek to Statesboro. The Phoenix rank third in hitting percentage (.209) and opponents' hitting percentage (.163) and boast the third-best overall record in the league.
“They're a great team,” said Callihan. “They're very versatile, they have a lot of different weapons offensively that can hurt us. They can beat you in a variety of ways and that's the biggest issue for us ? they're a pick-your-poison type of team ? it's not a situation where you can match up on one or two kids and take them out of the game. They've won quite a few matches this year so they're playing with a lot of confidence as well.”
UNC Greensboro (13-7, 5-2) have won seven of their past nine outings and gave Charleston their first loss on the league season on Oct. 12. The Spartans have held the opposition to a .162 attack percentage, second-lowest in the SoCon, and post 2.30 blocks per set which ranks third in the conference.
“UNCG is incredibly athletic and they run an extremely fast system,” said Callihan. “They really stress your defense; you're constantly in a reaction-type mode. It takes a lot of focus on our part to shade ahead of hitters and make sure we stay a step ahead of them because they're relentless in their execution and the way they move the ball around.”
