Men?s Tennis Starts UNF Invitational

Jacksonville, Fla. ? The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis Team started the UNF invitational off on the right foot.
Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium) defeated Bastian Maucher from Troy 6-0, 7-6 (2) on Saturday in the A draw of singles. He then faced Grega Teraz from ETSU and lost 7-6 (6), 3-6, 10-6.
Also in the A draw of singles, Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) defeated Dave Barton from Mercer 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3). Bekkers then faced Victor Vaz from Jacksonville and won 6-1, 6-4. He then faced Ivan Milijocevic from South Carolina State and lost 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
In the B draw of singles, Matthew Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) defeated Forrest Jenkins from Florida A&M 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Sands then faced Guillherme Sahadhi from Troy and lost 6-1, 7-5.
Alain Garrido (Vigo, Spain) lost to Gabriel Meana from SCSU 6-4, 6-4 in the B draw.
Garrido will face Paul Paiger on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the B singles consolidation.
Edio Castanhel (Criciuma, Brazil) lost to Lawrence Herradine from FAU 6-3, 6-1.
In the C draw of singles, Alonso Rodriguez (Lima, Peru) advanced to the finals. He won his first match against Jeff Smallwood from Bethune-Cookman 6-2, 6-1. In his second match he defeated Adam Hunt from Mercer 0-6, 6-3, 10-3. Rodriguez then faced Marc Misanovic from UNF and defeated him 7-6 (3), 7-5. In the finals Rodriguez will face KC Griffin from Memphis.
Phillip Prins (Cape Town, South Africa) defeated Aroon Khatter from Jacksonville 6-2, 6-1 in his first match of C singles. Prins then faced Rafael Matos and lost 7-5, 7-6 (3).
In C Singles, Mark Paetz (Munich, Germany) defeated Cristofer Martin 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 but lost to Jan Langer 6-3, 6-4.
In A Doubles, De Weerdt and Sands advanced to the semifinals by defeating Simbarashe Happy and Paul Paige from Florida A&M 8-3.
In B Doubles, Bekkers and Prins lost to Chapman Mitchell and Justin Wimpee from Mercer 8-5.
Castanhel and Garrido lost to Graham Edgar from UNF and Fausto Rocha from Belmont 8-6.
Paetz and Rodriguez lost to Vinny Craveiro and Marcos Oliveira from Jacksonville 8-5.
The Eagles will finish up the UNF Invitational Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.
