STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern swimming & diving team opened the New Year with their first of four consecutive home meets on Saturday, defeating Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) rivals Gardner-Webb, Radford and Florida A&M.
GSU was successful 163-131 over Gardner-Webb, 255-39 against Radford and defeated Florida A&M 216-4.
"It was certainly an exciting meet,” said coach Nathan Kellogg. “We swam well collectively with a few nice surprises. But in the big picture, this is only January and we have a lot of work to do. Our focus is always on February, but it was great to see some racing again."
The Eagles earned the victory after placing first in 10 events. Sophomore Courtney Martz (Woodbine, Ga.) posted four victories on the afternoon as she came in first in the 200 medley relay, 100 back, 50 free and 200 free relay. Sophomore Ashley White (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Lindsay Goodman (Knoxville, Tenn.) both were double event winners during the contest. Senior Jennifer Clayton (Marietta, Ga.) picked up two victories in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay events.
Junior diver Nikki Hutchison was successful in both the one and three meter diving events posting scores of 197.45 and 134.85.
GSU dominated the meet as freshmen Ali Campbell (Alberta, Canada) and Caroline Bevillard (Bishop, Ga.) swam to victory in the 100 and 200 free respectively. Campbell also notched a first place finish as a member of the 200 free relay. Junior Katelyn Woolfolk (Satellite Beach, Fla.) helped lead Georgia Southern to a victory as a member of the 200 free relay.
The Eagles return to action next Saturday as they host SCAD and New Orleans at the Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
