Women?s Hoops Takes to the Road at Chattanooga

STATESBORO, Ga. ? After enjoying a successful four-game homestand, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team will leave the comfort of Hanner Fieldhouse to battle Southern Conference leader Chattanooga, Monday evening, at McKenzie Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. vs. the Lady Mocs.
Georgia Southern (11-8, 7-1 SoCon) recently edged a tough Western Carolina squad, Saturday (Jan. 26) by a 64-62 decision in front of Hanner's fourth-largest crowd (1,710). With the win, Georgia Southern claims sole possession of second place in the league and extends its home unbeaten-streak to eight games and its win-streak to six contests.
League-leader Chattanooga (17-3, 9-0 SoCon) recently defeated College of Charleston, Saturday (Jan. 26), 73-63, at McKenzie Arena. It was the Lady Mocs 12th-consecutive win overall since defeating Alabama earlier in the season (Dec. 15).
Chattanooga leads the all-time series over Georgia Southern, 22-16, since the first meeting in 1979 when the Lady Mocs outscored the Lady Eagles, 79-69. Chattanooga has won the last five games vs. GSU, last downing the Lady Eagles, 65-52, in Statesboro (Feb. 19, 2007). The last time Georgia Southern beat the Lady Mocs was during the 2004-05 campaign at Hanner Fieldhouse, 61-53. The Lady Mocs hold a commanding advantage in games played at Chattanooga, 14-4.
Senior guard Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) leads the team with 12.2 points per game, followed by senior guard Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.), who averages 10.9 points in 19 starts. Atwood pulls down a team-best 5.7 rebounds per game and is among the league leaders in points and rebounds per contest.
Leading the league in scoring is Chattanooga's Alex Anderson with 17.8 points per game. She pulls down the league's second most rebounds per game with an 8.6 average. Shanara Hollinquest follows with 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest.
A 1985 graduate of Louisiana Tech, head coach Rusty Cram is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles and carries a 178-159 career and school record.
Chattanooga head coach Wes Moore, a 1986 graduate of Tennessee, carries a 232-65 school record in his 10th year at the helm of the Lady Mocs. In his 19th year overall, Moore has posted a 432-121 record.
