Chattanooga Downs Volleyball 3-1

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Chattanooga's Leslee Ball had 23 kills and Lara Newberry totaled 24 digs to lead the Lady Mocs to a 3-1 (30-19, 19-30, 30-25, 30-18) volleyball win over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse.

UTC stays undefeated in Southern Conference play at 4-0 and 9-6 overall. GSU drops to 4-13 and 1-4 in the SoCon.

“Chattanooga is a very solid team,” said GSU head coach
Nicole McCray. “They frustrated us because they dug a lot of balls. They have a great libero. She's definitely the leader of that team.”

Newberry's dig total was more than double of the next highest player ? 11 by GSU junior Christy Dowd (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Chattanooga held Georgia Southern to a .084 attack percentage, including .000 in games one and four. The Lady Mocs recorded 12 blocks, six from Laura Nethery and five each from Ball and Sarah Bass.

“They had a great serving match,” added McCray. “We served well in game two which is why we won. They served well in games one, three and four and that is huge. If we can't pass then it makes it very difficult to get a win.”

The two teams split identical 30-19 scores in the first two games. UTC broke a 21-21 tie with a 9-4 run to close out game three and cruised to the win in game four.

Ball's 23 kills came on a .319 hitting percentage.

Junior Bianca Julio (Curitiba, Brazil) led the GSU offense with 11 kills and junior Mae Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) had 31 assists.

The Eagles return to the court Sunday when they host Western Carolina at 2 p.m.
