Men?s Soccer Falls 2-0 at Elon

ELON, N.C. ? The Georgia Southern men's soccer team dropped its Southern Conference opener to Elon, Saturday night (Sep. 22) by a 2-0 margin at Rudd Field.
The Eagles fall to 3-5-0 overall and collect their first conference loss, while the Phoenix pick up their third-consecutive shutout win, improving to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
After a scoreless first half, the Phoenix got up on the scoreboard in the 57th minute after a Georgia Southern own goal. Three minutes after the Eagle miscue, Elon's Chris Leko notched his first goal of the season. Teammate Will Mason was credited with the assist as Leko received the long pass and scored off a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
Though the Eagles produced five shots in the second half, the team was unable to convert and Elon held on for the win.
Georgia Southern's best opportunity to score came in the first half when Jon Kinsler (Ormond Beach, Fla.) fired a shot on goal in the 21st minute, but Elon's Clint Irwin was there to make his only save of the day.
Juniors Julian Donaldson (Aurora, Colo.) and Kinsler, and freshman Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) each tallied two shots on the day.
Starting goalkeeper Brian Young (Roswell, Ga.) made six saves in 90 minutes of action.
Elon led the Eagles in shots by a 10-8 margin while Georgia Southern held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
With the Southern Conference schedule now open, the Eagles will next look to rebound against Wofford as Georgia Southern returns home to entertain the Terriers, Thursday, Sep. 27 at 5 p.m.
