STATESBORO, Ga. ? After a demanding seven-game road trip, the Georgia Southern men's soccer team returns home to entertain North Florida in the season's home opener, Wednesday at 5 p.m. on Eagle Field.
The Eagles (2-4-0) are coming off a recent win, blanking Radford, 1-0, last Sunday (Sep. 16), at the Wingate Inn Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. The win snapped a four-game skid and gives the Eagles momentum coming home and playing in front of the home crowd.
GSU's BJ Reine (Baton Rouge, La.), who scored the game-winner, was named the Offensive MVP of the Wingate Classic, while teammates Brian Young (Roswell, Ga.), Sean Sandoval (Aurora, Colo.) and Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) were named to the All-Classic Team.
The Eagles are currently led on offense by Reine, Clendening and Jon-Pierre Anthony (Birmingham, Ala.) with a goal apiece, and Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.) with a pair of assists.
The Ospreys (1-3-0) lost their third consecutive match after suffering a tough, 4-3 overtime loss to George Washington (Sep. 9) at the Longwood Tournament in Farmerville, Va.
North Florida, headed by coach Ray Bunch, is led on offense by Adam O'Neill with six points, including a pair of goals and assists. Close behind are Akil Defreitas and Oscar Ortiz, both tallying two goals and one assist, apiece.
In only four meetings, the Ospreys hold a 2-1-1 advantage over the Eagles. The last time the two teams met was last year at North Florida when the Eagles fell 3-2 in overtime. Georgia Southern's lone win against the Ospreys came back in 1991 with a decided 5-2 victory in Jacksonville, Fla.
The match-up is the second of the day's doubleheader, with the first pitting the women's soccer team against The Citadel at 2 p.m.
Shane's Rib Shack will be offering concessions at both the matches.
