STATESBORO, Ga. ? The seventh-seeded Georgia Southern men's soccer team will compete against No. 2 seed College of Charleston, Saturday afternoon to open up Southern Conference tournament action. The first round match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Eagles (6-11-0, 2-5-0) will look to repeat last year's run to the tournament's championship match, but will first have to face a tough College of Charleston (12-4-1, 6-1-0) who is on a four-game win streak. Earlier in the season, the Eagles hosted the Cougars on Eagle Field (Oct. 30), but dropped a 2-0 decision to the visitors in the season's conference finale.
Looking to halt a four-game skid this weekend, Georgia Southern earlier dropped its last game at Stetson (Nov. 6) in a late, non-conference match-up that ended in a close, 1-0 Hatters advantage. The Cougars last defeated Davidson (Nov. 3) on the road in a narrow, 2-1 decision.
The Eagles have a strong front line including freshman forward Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) and junior forward Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.). Clendening was recently awarded Southern Conference honors being named to the All-Conference second team. He leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Smith follows with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
College of Charleston's Kareem Yearwood leads the team with 25 points, including 12 points and one assist. He is followed by Matt Morris and Zach Prince with nine points.
