STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women's basketball team will continue non-conference action Tuesday versus Georgia (Nov. 13), concluding their three-game road trip in Athens. Georgia Southern stands at 1-1 on the season, while No. 9/10 Georgia is 2-0. The match-up between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Eagles is slated for 7 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
Georgia Southern is coming off its first win of the season, a 67-51 victory over Stetson (Nov. 11). Leading scorers for the Lady Eagles were seniors Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) and Chequilla Jessie (Sanford, Fla.), who scored a combined 24 points, each with 12 points. Atwood earned her first double-double of the season, the fourth of her career, with 10 rebounds and 12 points. Other notable contributors to the first victory were Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) with nine points and eight rebounds and Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) with 10 points shooting 4-of-5 from the field. Sophomore guard Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) dished out a career-high eight assists.
Georgia enters the contest with a recent 84-56 victory over George Mason (Nov. 11). Tasha Humphrey led the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points, her 40th career outing with 20 points in 95 games. Ashley Houts helped Humphrey and the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, seven steals and five assists.
The Lady Eagles (1-1) will take on the Lady Bulldogs (2-0) for the 28th time Tuesday. Georgia currently leads the series, 19-9 overall with a 9-3 home court advantage. Head coach Rusty Cram is looking for his first win over Georgia. The last time the Lady Eagles defeated Georgia in Athens was back in 1979 when Georgia Southern garnered a 68-56 victory.
Last year's contest took place at Hanner Fieldhouse with the Lady Bulldogs walking away with a close 75-71 victory. Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) led the Lady Eagles with 18 points on 4-of-10 from three-point range. Following closely behind Brown was Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) who scored 13 points and went 5-of-11 from the field.
