STATESBORO, Ga. ? In its third week of practice before the season opener on November 9, theGeorgia Southern women’s basketball team held its first inter-squad scrimmage, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28) at Hanner Fieldhouse.
“It was the first time we’ve been up and down the court in a game-type situation,” said 12th-year head coach Rusty Cram. “Naturally, everybody was a little tight. They have to get that feel for the first time this year.”
The Lady Eagles played two, 20-minute halves and by the second half the players established a rhythm.
“They started getting into their rhythm, to feel better and loosen up, and we started knocking some shots down,” said Cram. “Both teams started shooting the ball extremely well. I thought they played a little bit more intense. We had some good combinations, we had some good fast breaks and we had some good looks out of the offense. For a first scrimmage, I was well pleased.”
With their first game less than two weeks away, Cram noted some things that the team needs to work on.
“The biggest thing is that rotation on the defense,” said Cram. “They were working hard in the right place, but it was more of a one-on-one type defense, and not all five playing together. That just takes time.”
“We’ve got to work on being quicker in our offense, in our cuts, and not just dragging across the lane, but sprinting across there, ready to make something happen, and then to attack once we do get the basketball. But overall, I’m pleased with where we’re at.”
The season-opener of the 2007-2008 season is slated for November 9 atJacksonville at 7 p.m.
