Georgia Southern Men's Tennis Competes in Crimson Tide Fall Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? Day one of competition commenced at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships held in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Friday. Gregory Bekkers, Mark Paetz and Phillip Prins all competed from the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team. Paetz advanced to the singles quarterfinals and also sailed through to the doubles consolation round semifinals with Georgia State partner, Augusto Alvardo.
In singles action, sophomore Gregory Bekkers of Antwerp, Belgium, dropped his match to Bernardo Bachino of Jacksonville State University, 6-3, 6-3. After taking the first set, 6-4, from Trey Walston of host school Alabama, junior Phillip Prins, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, dropped the next two sets, falling to Walston in three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Cruising past his singles opponent in Starr singles, freshman Paetz, who hails from Munich, Germany, sailed into the quarterfinals defeating Miguel Artero of UAB in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Paetz will take on Wade Covington of Southern Miss in the quarterfinals Saturday morning.
Two Eagles doubles tandems faced tough competition in their two brackets, Tide and White, respectively. White doubles witnessed Bekkers/Prins fall, 8-4, to Gonzales/Redondo of AUM. The second doubles tandem of Alvardo/Paetz fell in the round of 16, but defeated the Jacksonville University duo of Andreas Amores/Thomas Bellman, 8-6, to advance to the consolation semifinals. The Eagles received a bye in the quarterfinals and will face George Gvelesiani/Doug Kenny of Georgia Tech Saturday in the semifinals of the consolation round.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the second and third rounds of singles followed by the third round of doubles.
