Eagles Defeat Vanderbilt in first-ever Swimming Meet at the Recreation Activity Center

STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern swimming & diving team christened the pristine Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activity Center on Saturday, defeating Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent Vanderbilt University 120-89.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to (2-0, 1-0) on the season, while Vanderbilt falls to (0-2, 0-0). It was the first time that Georgia Southern had ever faced the Commodores in the program's history.
"Hosting our first meet at our new facility really got our team fired up,” said coach Nathan Kellogg. “We had a lot of fans come out and show their support. It was a great opportunity to host Vanderbilt and we hope to continue competing against them for years to come."
Two GSU swimmers were triple event winners on the afternoon with sophomore Courtney Martz (Woodbine, Ga.) and freshman Ali Campbell (Alberta, Canada) leading the way. Martz was victorious in the 50 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay. Campbell, who earlier this week was named Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimmer of the Week, notched wins in the 1000 free, 500 free and 400 free relay.
Sophomore swimmer Katie Thompson (Blairsville, Ga.) posted two victories teaming up in the 400 medley relay and captured a solo title in the 200 breastroke. Freshman teammate Steffi Sheckler also earned two victories in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Sheckler received the CCSA's first-ever Diver of the Week honors this past Tuesday.
Seven Georgia Southern swimmers' were victorious as single event winners Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles return to action next Friday as they travel to CCSA opponent Davidson. The meet is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in Davidson, N.C.
