JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The
Georgia Southern women's
tennis team posted several victories in singles and doubles action on day one
of the North Florida Invitational, which is being played in Jacksonville, Fla.
The women's tournament is made up of a
competitive nine-team field, which began today. The tournament features three
64-player singles draws for the women, as well as three 16-team doubles
flights.
Sophomore Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax,
Va), freshman Melanie Rolle (Gainesville,
Fla.) and freshman Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.)
all advanced in the “A” singles division. Kegerreis defeated Irya Citko of
Mercer 6-1, 6-3 before falling in the round of 16 to Troy's Annabelle Bares. Both Rolle and
Beavers also were defeated in the second round of “A” singles competition.
Eagles junior Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.)
received a first round bye in “B” singles, before defeating Amalia Bugge from
Mercer by a score of 6-1, 6-3. With the win, Maddox will face off against Catherine
Canady of Stetson in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
In “C” singles action, senior Kelli Helms (Cairo,
Ga.) advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal round
with a first round bye and a win over North Florida's
Robin Rogers. Helms defeated Rogers
6-2, 6-4. Helms' teammate Shea Huxtable (Winter
Springs, Fla.) also
advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Shaunda Gaiter of Bethune Cookman
6-0, 6-3.
The tandem of Kegerreis and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.)
were successful in the opening round of “A” doubles play by a score of 8-2 over
the team of Monika Musilova and Jeneice Ward of Bethune Cookman. By defeating
Musilova and Ward the Eagles duo advances to the semifinal round, which will be
held tomorrow.
The Eagles are back on the court tomorrow morning, as day
two of the North Florida Invitational continues in Jacksonville, Fla.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
