STATESBORO - The No. 65-ranked Georgia Southern women's tennis defeated Mercer, 4-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles (8-2) defended its newly-minted ITA national ranking by blanking the Bears (2-7) to run its current win streak to three. Georgia Southern wraps up its non-conference schedule on Friday, hosting South Carolina State in a Noon contest at Wallis.
Georgia Southern earned the doubles point by taking a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles from Juliette Nask and Evelyn Warkentin, as well as a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles from Hannah Eifert and Franzi Heinemann.
The Eagles then completed the sweep with three straight-set singles wins. Nanaka Kijima downed Ines Homberg, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 singles, then Heinemann downed Tea Zivic, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Amelie Rosadoro then clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
"Today we looked really solid," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Especially in doubles, and early in our singles matches. All three doubles teams were playing lights out and I was extremely impressed to the quick starts we had on each court. Having Evy back on court was really nice and she and Juliette played great.Â
"Maybe even more impressive, perhaps, was how on point both Hannah and Franzi were in doubles. Super proud of all three teams today. I think we had fantastic early starts in our singles sets today as well. We definitely got pushed a bit in some second sets, and that's something we need to address and remedy for the future. Overall is was a good day for Eagles Tennis and we are excited for our last non-conference match this Friday."
