Alex Stewart 2018-19

Alex Stewart

Alex Stewart begins her fourth season with the Eagles’ women’s basketball program in 2018-19 as an assistant coach. She joined Georgia Southern in 2015 after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Toledo. Stewart is instrumental in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the program but primarily serves as the travel coordinator for Georgia Southern and is instrumental in running practices, scouting opponents and monitoring the student-athletes’ academic progress.

The Eagles were 5-25 overall and 2-16 in the Sun Belt Conference in 2017-18, but improved greatly over the second half of the Sun Belt season, averaging more than five points per game and five percent better shooting from the floor over the final nine games of the league slate. GS took sixth-seeded Louisiana to triple overtime in the first round of the 2018 Sun Belt Tournament, falling 88-81 in the longest game for the Eagles since 1998.

Georgia Southern went 13-17 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt Conference in 2016-17 - improvements of six overall and five league wins from 2015-16. The nine league wins were the most for an Eagle women's basketball team since the 2010-11 season. Georgia Southern earned the sixth seed in the Sun Belt tournament and made its first appearance in the league's postseason. Seniors Patrice Butler and Angel McGowan each earned All-Conference honors on the year and the team enjoyed the friendly confines of Hanner Fieldhouse, going 8-6 on the season at home.

During her time with Toledo, Stewart worked with all aspects of the program, including perimeter player development, recruiting, academic support and opponent scouting.

Prior to her time with the Rockets, Stewart spent one season at Jacksonville University as an assistant coach where she was responsible for point guard development, opponent scouting, film breakdown, film exchange and recruiting. During her time with the Dolphins, she coached Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Year Crystal Bell, the program’s first defensive honoree.

Stewart went to Jacksonville following three seasons on the support staff at her alma mater, Georgia Tech. During her stint with the Yellow Jackets, she served as an academic coach and assistant director of basketball operations.

Before joining the coaching ranks, Stewart played professionally in Keflavik, Iceland for one season. While there, she helped her team win the Icelandic Championship and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She then began her coaching career as an assistant at Agnes Scott College in 2005. The Scotties posted a 33-22 record during Stewart’s tenure as an assistant coach, including the program’s first appearance in the 2006 Great South Athletic Conference Championship Game. In 2007 she was elevated to Head Coach of the Scotties and led the squad to a 17-9 record, the best mark in school history, for a second-place finish in the regular season.

As a student-athlete, Stewart played at Georgia Tech from 1999 to 2004, earning Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) third-team accolades as a junior. In the career book, the two-time team captain finished her career ranked third all-time in assists (505) and fourth in free throw percentage (.777, 269-346). Stewart became just the second Yellow Jackets player in school history to earn a triple double (11 pts., 10 rbs. & 11 asts.) against Charleston Southern on Jan. 30, 2001. She was also the first player in ACC history to accomplish the feat coming off the bench.

A native of Norcross, Ga., Stewart earned her bachelor’s degree in international affairs in 2004.
