Georgia Southern celebrates its Play4Kay game in style with big victory over the Herd
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's basketball collected its 20th win of the season on Thursday evening, defeating Marshall 76-55 at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center in its annual Play4Kay Pink Game.
The Eagles (20-6, 13-2 SBC) reach the 20-win plateau for the 12th time in school history, and only the second time in the last 23 seasons. The 13 Sun Belt wins also set a new program best, surpassing the 12 wins that the 2022-23 team achieved three seasons ago. Marshall falls to 22-7 overall and 12-4 in the league with the loss.
Georgia Southern opened up on fire, hitting 10-of-13 shots from the floor in a first quarter where the Eagles outscored the Herd 26-10. The home team stretched that advantage to 24 points midway through the second quarter and took a 46-33 lead into halftime.
Marshall responded coming out of the locker room at halftime, embarking on a 7-0 run and holding the Eagles without a point for the first five minutes of the third quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Kishyah Anderson coming out of the media time out, however, pushed the Eagles' lead back to double digits, and the Eagles would shoot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the floor in the fourth quarter to stamp out the Herd comeback attempt.
A quartet of Eagles reached double figures on the evening, led by reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Anderson's 23 points. McKenna Eddings added 6 points, while Destiny Garrett added 13 points and Kayla Cleaveland chipped in 12. Timaya Lewis-Eutsey was the only Marshall player to reach double figures with her 21 points.
Eagle of the Game
Anderson, the league's leader in field goal percentage, hit 10-of-14 shots from the floor and all three of her free throw attempts en route to her game-high 23 points. She added 10 rebounds for her third straight double-double and also notched a pair of assists and a steal in playing all 40 minutes of action.
Stat of the Game
A year after turning the ball over 32 times in a 71-65 loss to Marshall at the Hill in February of 2025, the Eagles cut those turnovers in half tonight (16) and also beat the Herd in the battle of points off of turnovers, scoring 25 points off of 16 forced turnovers by the visitors.
Quotables
Head coach Hana Haden on the victory over the Herd
"Obviously a huge win for our team. Marshall is a really good team, they have so many weapons and so many different ways that they go out you. Especially with #3 (Eutsey) who is almost impossible to guard one-on-one. They have good shooters and their post players can play inside or out. So just really proud of our defensive effort to hold a team like that to just 55 points."
On answering the Marshall charge coming out of halftime
"They ripped that momentum from us. I think we just took better care of the ball and found a way to get some stops. We cleaned that up and were able to take back control of the game."
