NCAA SCORECARD
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The sixth-ranked Georgia Southern rifle team continued its winning ways, picking up a 4,745-4,629 victory over #19 UAB Friday in SoCon action at the Inouye Marksmanship Center.
The score, which tied the school record for an aggregate output, raised the Eagles' three-location score used for NCAA Championship selection by five points.
In smallbore, the Eagles tied the school record with a 2,358 team score to start the day off right. Emme Walrath tied her career high with a 593 to take first place and was followed by four solid scores from the four other counters in Emma Pohlmann (589; 2nd), Zahra Gonzalez Mazo (career-high 588 [36]; 3rd), Bremen Butler (588 [35]; 4th) and Tori Watts (587; 5th). Hailey Singleton shot a 577 and Matilda Eyland shot a 575 to round out the strong effort from the Eagles.
In air rifle, all five counters posted a 595 or higher as the Eagles shot a 2,387, which is tied for the fifth best in program history. Walrath led the way with a 598, and was followed by Gonzalez Mazo and Pohlmann with a 597, Watts and Butler with a 596 and Eylander with a 595.
Walrath tied the school record with an 1,191 aggregate, a mark both she and Butler set last season, to take first. Pohlmann took the silver with a 1,186 and Gonzalez Mazo became just the seventh Eagle in program history to shoot 1,185 or higher as she set a new career high to finish third. In all, Georgia Southern took the top five spots on the day.
The win moves the Eagles to 22-2 on the season, adding onto their school-record total for wins in a campaign. It also wraps up SoCon action with a perfect 7-0 mark. It is the fifth straight season the Eagles have gone unblemished in the conference and Friday's win runs their SoCon win streak to 36 matches dating back to an Oct. 31, 2020 loss to UAB.
Words From Coach Soren Butler: "Really good day across the board. Thanks to The Citadel for allowing us and UAB to come and shoot here under such short notice. Hail Southern!"
