THE OPENING TIP
- Georgia Southern men's basketball dropped its third straight contest on Saturday afternoon at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, falling to top-seeded Troy, 83-78. Alden Applewhite led the scoring for the Eagles posting 19 points, while Spudd Webb (17), Tyren Moore (14), and Nakavieon White (11) all contributed in double figures. With over two minutes left in the game, White drained a three-pointer on the wing to give the Eagles a 74-71 advantage. Georgia Southern knocked down two free throws to pull back within one of the Trojans, before a free throw rebound and immediate foul gave Troy a three-point play.
- Despite losing its last three games, Georgia Southern still holds strong in a tie for third place in the Sun Belt standings. The Eagles, sitting at 5-4, still have games against ULM, Louisiana, Texas State, Appalachian State (2), Marshall (2), Georgia State, and James Madison. As it stands entering the weekend, five of the next seven opponents are below or equal to the Eagles in the Standings, but six of the next nine contests will be on the road.
- The Eagles need a reset and refocus and this weekend against ULM and Louisiana might just be the road trip they need. After a 1-3 home stand, the Eagles embark on the beginning of a six-of-nine game road trip to end the season. Georgia Southern spends this upcoming weekend in Louisiana, before returning home for Texas State, Appalachian State, and Marshall. The Eagles' final home contest is scheduled for February 14, as Marshall caps off the home slate.
- Graduate guard Tyren Moore became the second Eagle this season to score 30-plus points in a contest, scoring a season-best 34 points against Coastal Carolina at home. Moore shot 12-of-21 from the field, including 7-of-12 from beyond the three-point line, tying a career-high seven made three-pointers. The Louisville, Kentucky, native tallied a week where he averaged 27.5 points per game, adding 21 points against Old Dominion.
- Georgia Southern men's basketball has been one of the more prolific scoring teams in the Sun Belt Conference since joining the league during the 2014-15 season. In the 12 years since the Eagles' arrival, Georgia Southern has posted a 43-3 record when scoring 90-plus points in a game. For the 2025-26 season, the Eagles have secured an 8-0 record when tallying 90-plus points per game.
- Senior forward Shainen Carter looks to etch his name into the record books this weekend in Louisiana, needing one block to crack the Georgia Southern career blocks list. Carter tied the school record for blocks in a single game earlier this season against Old Dominion on the road. If he registers a block on Thursday, Carter will join the likes of Avante Parker (2024), Trey Dawkins (2019), Rory Spencer (2010), Louis Graham (2007), and Emmett Smith (1990).
