STATESBORO – Troy (15-6, 8-1 SBC) used a strong all-around performance to hold off Georgia Southern (13-9, 5-4 SBC), 83-78, Saturday afternoon at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center.
Victor Valdes led the Trojans with 22 points, going 6-of-14 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. Thomas Dowd added 16 points, and Cobi Campbell score 12 as Troy built a first-half lead and held down the stretch.
Alden Applewhite paced Georgia Southern with 19 points, while Spudd Webb added 17 and Tyren Moore contributed 14. Nakavieon White chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Eagles.
Troy jumped out to a 47-38 advantage by halftime and maintained control early in the second half, though the Eagles rallied behind balanced scoring and pressure defense. Georgia Southern cut the margin to within five in the final minutes, but Troy's free throw shooting down the stretch preserved the victory.
Troy shot 49.1 percent from the field and made nine three-pointers, while Georgia Southern finished with 48.2 percent shooting and hit 11 triples of its own.

- Troy opened the scoring knocking down all five of their first shots, before the Eagles rallied to cut into the lead, 18-11, at the first media timeout.
- Through the middle of the first half, Georgia Southern and Troy exchanged baskets, as the Eagles shot 52.6 percent from the field, 27-24.
- The Trojans found some easy buckets under the hoop, making six of the next six baskets to extend their lead, 38-32.
- At the half, the Trojans were shooting 63.6 percent from three-point range, while adding a 66.7 percent line from the field, 47-38.
- Georgia Southern cut the lead to six points at the first called timeout of the second half, holding the Trojans to one field goal, 58-52.
