Volleyball Cannot Overcome Florida State, Drops First Home Contest of 2025

First sweep of Eagles at home since NIVC in 2023

STATESBORO– Georgia Southern volleyball (9-2) had set point in the first set, but saw Florida State (6-3) rally to win it and take the ensuing two sets, getting swept at home for the first time since 2023. A crowd of 967 packed into Hanner Fieldhouse for the match, the biggest crowd of the season thus far.

"What a great atmosphere we had today, we really fed off the energy all game," head coach Chad Willis said. "We saw a lot of good things tonight and a lot of things we want to clean up. We're going to need that support to continue down the stretch in conference play."

Three straight attack errors and a few kills for Georgia Southern spelled an early 7-0 run in the first set. The Seminoles answered back, and after trading points for most of the set, the Eagles found themselves up 24-23 after an FSU service error.

FSU rattled off three consecutive points to stun the Eagles in the opening frame, including a challenge that was reversed, winning 26-24.

Despite going up 9-6 early in the second set on a Reagan Barth kill, GS stumbled following. FSU went on a 6-0 run and took a commanding 14-10 lead, which the Eagles never overcame, dropping the second stanza 25-17.

Sam Bowron & the Eagles came out hot in the third. Two Bowron kills and a Kirsten Barrett ace made it a 16-13 lead, and was even extended to 19-16 on a Maggie Sale kill, but a timely 4-0 run for FSU put them in front.

Knotted at 22, the Seminoles slammed three consecutive kills to take the lead and match, sweeping the Eagles at Hanner Fieldhouse - the first time they had been swept at home since Dec. 7, 2023 against South Florida in the NIVC.

Bowron paced the Eagles with 10 kills, hitting .250, followed by Barth, who had eight. Maddie Cugino contributed 17 digs in just three sets to lead the team.

The Eagles begin conference play on Thursday at Old Dominion.
