Women's Tennis Earns 4-1 Win Over Troy On Tuesday

Eagles will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, hosting No. 43 Old Dominion at Wallis

Box Score

TROY, Ala. - Georgia Southern women's tennis kept its postseason hopes alive with a 4-1 Sun Belt Conference win at Troy on Tuesday morning in Troy, Ala.

The Eagles are now 11-9 overall and 3-6 in the Sun Belt after the victory, while Troy falls to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the league. Georgia Southern will host conference regular season champion and No. 43-ranked Old Dominion in its regular season finale on Saturday at 10 a.m., needing a win over the Monarchs to possibly qualify for the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Championships next week in Rome, Ga.

The matchup between the Trojans and the Eagles was originally competed in Statesboro on March 30, but rains halted the match in the middle of singles play after Georgia Southern led, 1-0, after doubles. The match was rescheduled to Troy, necessitating the match restarting from scratch.

Like the earlier matchup, the Eagles were able to claim the doubles point from the Trojans thanks to a 6-3 win by Hannah Eifert and Franzi Heinemann at No. 2 doubles, as well as a 6-2 win by Nanaka Kijima and Mackenzie Leopold at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, the Trojans took the first set in four of the six singles matches, but the Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set win by Evelyn Warkentin at No. 3 singles. Troy would close the gap to 2-1 with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles.

The Eagles would get a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win by Amelie Rosadoro at No. 6 singles, then a clinching 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 win by Franzi Heinemann at No. 2 singles to claim the victory.

"We really enjoyed today on the court," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "We made this trip very business like. The ladies did a great job of putting their heads down and working and fighting for each point.

"We are naturally a very strong outdoor team and we've played maybe five straight matches indoors," McCaffrey said. "Getting back outside felt a little different but the ladies did a fantastic job from the outset. Doubles was on point and the teams all played a very smart level of tennis to take the point relatively easily. In singles, Evy did a great job of being consistent and playing a very smart match. With a really big win from Amelie in three sets and Franzi coming back from 6-1, 3-0 down in the 2nd set to win the match - that showed a lot of heart by her and the rest of the squad. Now we look forward to Old Dominion on Saturday!"
